THE AMARANTHINE CYCLE

It is an endless loop of despair!
The ‘Monster’ in office is hated by most.
He watches as the masses suffer,
Yet he prioritises his white-elephant projects.
He seems so powerless against security issues and the deteriorating economy,
Yet embezzlement is always within his capabilities.
Nepotism and corruption have become the order of the day;
Hardship, poverty and the resulting adaptation have long been the norm.
The common man is left to count the days.
It is all for an appointed time,
Monster’s days in office are numbered.

As the fourth year comes to an end,
Here comes Mr. ‘Saint’ with a new face and a different party.
Saint appears to be the saviour of the day;
With his pragmatic words and his message of hope.
The common man is convinced and puts his faith in him.
Running and dodging bullets just to cast his vote;
Feeling content and relief knowing that he’s done his part,
so he can proudly say “My vote was instrumental in bringing the change,
The change we have long been crying for”.

Mr. Saint becomes Mr. President and rejoicing siezes the air.
Jubilation and shouts of triumph, believing we’ve all won.
Felicitations lasted weeks, as we all anticipated the change.
Yet slowly but surely, Saint meets power and becomes Monster.

The ‘Monster’ in office is hated by most.
He watches as the masses suffer.
The vulnerable are swallowed by the untouchable.
The common man is left to count the days.
it is all for an appointed time,
Monster’s days in office are numbered.

As the fourth year comes to an end,
Here comes Mr. ‘Saint’ with a new face and a different party.
The amaranthine cycle spins round and round
The economy is in shambles and the public welfare in shackles.
A country known to be the Giant and pride of Africa,
Has now become an object of mockery.
Generation after generation, the same script is played out but with different casts.
The average man is but an instrument;
a stepping stone into opulence while he wreaths in abject penury.

Will the narrative ever change?
It is an endless loop of despair!
